Event Format and Rules

Rules

The rules are simple. The consequences are not.

The Loop

  • 5 km trail loop
  • Approximately 300 m of elevation gain per lap
  • Same loop every hour

Hourly Starts

  • A new lap starts every hour, on the hour
  • You must be present at the start line when the hour begins

Completion Rule

  • You must complete the loop within the hour to continue
  • Any remaining time before the next start is rest time

Elimination

  • If you do not finish within the hour, or if you choose not to start the next lap, your event is over
  • When you quit, you must ring the gong
  • If no one completes the 24 laps, then the winner is the last competitor standing, but must complete one lap more than any other competitor. Once the second-last competitor drops out, the winner must still do a final solo lap. If any spectator or prior drop-out wants to accompany this final competitor to cheer them on, that is encouraged.

Movement

  • You may run, hike, walk, shuffle, roll, somersault. Whatever you think will get you through a full lap but does not involve any mechanical equipment beyond shoes or poles.

Assistance

  • Assistance from other competitors is allowed
  • No outside pacers or non competitor assistance on course

Aid and Support

  • An aid station will be available at the start and finish area
  • Competitors must be fully self supported while on course

Camping

  • On site camping is available for participants and crew
  • Sleeping between laps is encouraged but rarely effective

The Final Lap

  • Participants who complete 23 loops advance to the 24th lap
  • The 24th lap is a timed race
  • Fastest finisher of the final lap is the overall winner

Safety

Participants are responsible for their own nutrition, hydration, and gear.

Mandatory gear, which must be available at the base if not on your person, includes:

  1. Trail Appropriate Footwear: Shoes suitable for trail running or hiking. This course has steep sections and variable conditions.
  2. Headlamp or Light Source: Required for all laps that may take place in low light or darkness. Must be bright enough to safely navigate trail terrain. A backup light is strongly recommended.
  3. Personal Hydration Capacity: You must carry enough water or fluids to safely complete a 5 km loop. Aid is only available at the start and finish area.
  4. Weather Appropriate Clothing: Layers suitable for changing mountain conditions, including cold overnight temperatures and possible rain. This may include a warm layer, shell, gloves, or hat depending on forecast.
  5. Whistle or Audible Signalling Device: In case you need to signal for help on course.

Event organizers reserve the right to pull a participant if continuing would be unsafe, even if that participant disagrees loudly.
